Picking on a cripple
I sort of feel like I am about to pick on a cripple, but I can no longer resist the urge. Going to talk about Vangaurd (the cripple)again. More specifically about a blogger who constantly sings the praises of a game the still is not finished, long after its release. Holding true to the legacy of Brad McQuaid and his run on EQ1. Features lauded still not added, features in game borken, content hollow, etc etc. But on to the real reason for the post.
The Blog in question is Journeys with Jaye. Now don’t get me wrong, I read the blog and usually enjoy it, more so when it was a game I had played that was being posted about, but the writing is good and the screen shots pretty. Todays post just really made me cringe a bit, so let the picking begin, so feel free to go read the post and look at the pretty pictures, then come back.
5 cool things about Vanguard ????
1.) The empty feel of the world. Check out all those screen shots, the only living things in them are trees and Jaye. As far as character population, they are down to maybe 2 or 3 servers and those are pretty under populated for the size of the world.
2.) Not quite sure about this flying mount thing. Sounds like they are not really implemented yet, but can’t be clear from the post and I have not logged in since open beta closed, abomination that that was.
3.) Diplomacy. Supposedly this works now and means something. Probably the skill used in keeping the game online.
4.) Perfect game for people who like to wander around endlessly looking for something to do.
5.) Look and feel, lots of browns. All the gear is realistic looking, which in and of itself is not bad, this is probably the only point I can’t really pick on, other than it was the dumbest thing the rabbid dogs at the FoH boards harped on endlessly.

Angry Robot Books
Hahaha. I stumbled on the trackback ping so figured I’d reply to your entry! Just wanted to say that you haven’t read my blog carefully if you think I’m constantly singing the praises of the game. I’ve been very careful to point out that the game isn’t finished, and I’ve also stated in previous entries that it’s not in a state where I feel I can write a review that encourages people to go buy it.
As for the post you linked, it was actually motivated by the podcast I had done on the same topic. We had done one show about our top 5 things we wanted to see fixed/added into Vanguard. To balance it out, we did the next episode on our top 5 cool things about Vanguard. I’d encourage you to check both episodes out over at virginworlds.com. (Episode 19 and 20 of Voyages of Vanguard)
I added an entry about my top 5 cool things because I wanted to add in screenshots of the places we had described in the show. I hope that puts it in context for you.
As for your views on my 5 points, we can agree to disagree. I have no problem with those that criticize the game – in fact, I think much of the criticism is warranted. *I* am enjoying the game, but I can understand why many don’t. Having said that, the game has changed a ton since the debacle of launch, and there are some more big changes coming soon. As a result, many of the criticisms against Vanguard are becoming outdated and inaccurate.
Anyway, thanks for the attention (even if it’s sorta backhanded!) And nice photos at the bottom of your site.
